Obama Encourages Tourism in America to Create Jobs

by Emma.Paterson on May 14, 2012

The Obama administration has announced on Thursday that they have plans to attract at least twice as many foreign visitors to America over the next decade. The president hopes that by increasing tourism to the country the economy will be boosted and more jobs will be created.

The new plan will increase tourism by making it easier for foreign visitors to get tourist visas to enter the USA. The goal of the plan is to attract at least 100 million visitors per year. These foreign tourists would spend approximately $250 billion every year, helping to add an estimated 2.1-3.3 million jobs to the economy. The initiative also encourages Americans to travel within the USA to see all that the country has to offer and spend their tourism dollars at home. The campaign will promote trademark American destinations such as the Grand Canyon and Yellowstone National Park to international visitors.

America’s Tourism Dropping in Recent Years

The United States has been losing grounds as a desirable destination in recent years in the international tourism market. America’s market share of tourism worldwide was at 17 percent in the year 2000 and has fallen to 11 percent in 2010.

Why have so many people avoided visiting the USA? One of the reasons that tourism dropped was because after the September 11th terrorist attacks many people were afraid to travel within the USA. Also, even if tourists were not afraid of travel they were annoyed by the extremely heightened security which made it very difficult to get into the country as a visitor. For example, at Los Angeles International Airport and John F. Kennedy Airport last year it took two hours to clear customs during peak times. In the year 2001 the drop in tourism was dramatic and the industry experienced a $13.3 billion decline.

The Recession in 2009 also had a negative effect on tourism to the USA because people could not afford holidays to America in their budgets anymore. In the year 2009, tourism plunged another $2.1 billion from the previous year.

How to Make More People Want to Visit the USA?

How does the president aim to increase the number of foreign visitors to the USA? One of the major steps that the report outlines is to offer information and services to non-English speaking visitors so that these guests feel more confident making their way around the USA. Also, the plan is to improve the efficiency of the visitor visa and visa waiver system so that it is simpler for foreign visitors to enter the country. The USA will also be promoting itself as “open for business” as a tourist destination to a wide range of markets all around the world.

A $150 million marketing campaign will be launched in May to promote the USA to travellers worldwide. The advertisements will include singer Rosanne Cash performing a song entitled “Land of Dreams” while images of happy people on beaches, meadows and city streets are shown. The campaign will also include magazine ads, billboards, online videos, and much more.

A German tourist who was on holiday in Florida has undergone a terrifying experience after she was bitten by a shark at Vero Beach. The 47 year old woman, Karin Ulrike Stei is in currently in hospital in serious condition after suffering a huge shark bite on her thigh which exposed her bone. From above her knee to her calf, most of the flesh from her leg was missing.

She was standing in water which was only waist deep when she was attacked.

Quick Reaction of Lifeguards Saved Woman

Beach lifeguard Erik Toomsoo was the one who dragged the injured woman into shore. When he heard the screams he ran down the beach and swam out to her, calling out to other people on the beach to call 9/11.

Some other passers-by and construction workers assisted Toomsoo as he neared the shore. Toomsoo is being hailed as a hero but he has said that he was simply doing his job and that he hopes Stei will be alright.

Luckily, at that moment a Martin County Fire Rescue helicopter was passing over the beach on its way back from a visit to the Sebastian River Medical Center. One of the flight paramedics looked out the window and saw the trail of blood which Stei’s injured leg had left in the water. The told the pilot and the helicopter swooped down to take the shark-bitten visitor to the hospital.

Stei was immediately flown to Lawnwood Regional Medical Center & Heart Institute where she had emergency surgery on her leg.

What Type of Shark Was It?

It is not known what species of shark made the attack however judging by the size of the bite it likely was something larger than the black tip sharks which are commonly seen in the area.

Experts at the International Shark Attack File suspect that Stei was probably attacked by an aggressive Lemon, Tiger or Bull shark. These species are known for their sharp and serrated teeth and would be able to tear large chunks of flesh away in this manner.

Should Wading Now Be Off Limits?

It is unusual for a shark to bite a swimmer who is in water which is only waist deep and this attack is being described as a freak accident. Shark bites are quite rare in this area of Florida, and there have only been 17 incidents from 1882 to 2011. This is low compared to nearby Brevard County where 103 attacks have been reported since 1882.

One of the reasons why the shark might have been in the shallow beach water is that there have been pods of fish recently in the area. It is thought that the sharks might have been following the fish around. It is also thought that the shark which attacked Stei might have been a particularly aggressive individual.

City lifeguards have advised people to stay out of the water for the next couple of days. He also reminded beachgoers only to swim in areas where lifeguards are present.
